Review: ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ #12 Blasts Off Into The Great Beyond

The Guardians of the Galaxy have had a hell of a year. They’ve faced monsters, criminals and invasions. Now they literally have a pantheon they need to defeat, with just a bunch of scoundrels. It ain’t gonna be easy.

It’s the end of one era, as the heroes put a stop to the greatest enemy they ever faced. It’s a killer conclusion to one era of the Guardians while teasing the next. It comes to us from Al Ewing, Juann Cabal, Federico Blee, and Cory Petit.

The Olympians are coming. They’ve already destroyed the Guardians’ ship, with Rocket, Groot, Marvel Boy and Hercules aboard. Can Nova lead his surviving team of galactic losers against the most powerful beings in the universe?

Ewing takes one of the most common tropes in comics- an all action climax issue- and puts his spin on it. This issue is full of crazy ideas, big character moments, triumphant pay offs, and in the end it’s highly satisfying all around. The only problem with it really is how briefly it gives readers a glimpse of the new status quo.

Cabal and Blee do a fantastic job on the art. Cabal continues to be inventive with layouts, character posing and points of view. The panel of Hercules attacking his father is a fantastic synthesis of Cabal, Blee and Petit as well. This issue is a perfect example of why Guardians has been such appointment reading, just for the art.

Guardians hasn’t been big or flashy. It’s flown under the radar for a lot of readers, but it’s been one of the most consistent series Marvel has put out for the past few years. Ewing has proven his skill as a writer, writing two vastly different yet equally enjoyable series with this and Hulk. Cabal has cemented his “superstar in the making” status with some of the most inventive issues to come from Marvel in years. Meanwhile, Blee and Petit have quietly and consistently done great work (with definite career best moments for both).

Now, on to the future for the Guardians. And I can’t wait to see what it shapes up to be in April.

Guardians of the Galaxy #12 is available now from Marvel Comics.
