It’s Halloween! Yeah, right. Like there’s ANYTHING that can scare us more than what we’ve all gone through so far in 2020! But hey, time to sit back, watch scary movies and have a giggle at how silly things were when we didn’t know real fear – and also time for the Halloween Art For Art’s Sake!
Okay, let’s start with the greatest Halloween tale there’s ever been… It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Seriously, it’s something that should be a staple of all your Halloween celebrations, the 1966 animated TV special based Charles Schulz’s Peanuts, produced and animated by Bill Melendez. There’s plenty of uploads on You Tube or Daily Motion. Go watch it now.
And then a quick google search for the Great Pumpkin took me to this by J. Bone.
And he explains it thus:
“I had a very strange dream the other night. I was watching a Charlie Brown cartoon. Linus was waiting, as he always does, in that cold, lonely pumpkin patch but no Great Pumpkin. Then up out of the shadows rose this weird multi-limbed pumpkin-headed creature who could only be the Great Pumpkin…unfortunately Linus had already long ago expired. Death from waiting! Poor Linus!”
And then he goes and posts this as well – now really Mr Bone, we all know CB just doesn’t do the swears…

Dan Berry makes incredible comics – of which this one was a particularly chilling one: The Devil’s Steps (More in the link).
But if you really want a scare, there’s no-one in comics land does it as well as Emily Carroll. Some of the most terrifying comics online are from this wonderful artist – His Face All Red, Margot’s Room, Out of Skin – all making great use of the potential of digital comics to create tension and terror.
When The Darkness Presses is just the perfect example of how great Carroll is at comics and scares.
And of course, you click on the door in the webcomic and things just get worse. Brilliant stuff from Carroll.
