Review: ‘The Flash’ #756 Sets Plans And Panic In Motion

Cover by Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, & Hi-Fi

Barry Allen has become defined more by the mistakes he’s made than by the heroic deeds he’s done. In The Flash #756 his latest mistake might be his undoing.

As the time ticks down on the end of this run, Barry faces his greatest foe in one last battle. It might seem like a cliche, given how many times Barry has faced Eobard Thawne in comics and television the last seven years. However, Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands make this encounter truly feel special.

Thawne is on the loose, rocketing through time to gather the deadliest incarnation of the Rogues in history. Barry has accepted what he has to do to stop him, grimly pushing his allies away so he doesn’t hurt them. However, Barry Allen can’t predict who will face him in the coming moments.

This issue is almost pure set-up. However, Williamson has definitely seemed to have broken through the wall as the end is in sight. The character work is spot on, and has genuine weight for Barry and his allies. Though the team of Rogues Thawne gathers is predictable (except for the final page twist), he’s also able to write it in a way that they feel shocking, even if they’re not a surprise.

The star of his issue though is Duce and Guerrero’s one-two punch. Duce has grown from a strong fill-in to an artist capable of some absolutely stunning splash pages and panels. Barry’s first appearance in the issue is breathtaking- a two page wide panel that is one of the best Flash images I’ve seen in years. Guerrero takes his cues from the line-art and fills the Flash pages with light and color, while the Reverse Flash pages are much darker, with the non-Thawne figures in muted tones.

This is an issue that’s well worth picking up, especially if you’ve fallen off the book in recent months. Williamson has definitely regained his footing in his race to the finish line, and Duce in this one issue has shown he’s a superstar in the making.

The Flash #756 is available now from DC Comics.
