Review: ‘Conan The Barbarian’ #12 Brings One Era Of The Warrior’s Saga To A Close

For the last year, we’ve learned about everything that made Conan the Barbarian the legend that he is. Now that culminates in the greatest battle of his life- the last battle of Conan the Barbarian.

Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham bring this chapter of Conan’s life to an end in Conan the Barbarian #12.

Returned to life by Crom himself, King Conan of Aquilonia draws his blade as Razazel and the Crimson Twins in the fight of his life. While the angry god is determined to return to rule Earth, it has never faced a warrior like Conan. Can he stop Razazel, before it rises from its tomb and conquers the world?

Where last issue showed how the past year of stories created the man who could stand face to face with his god, hold his ground and win his favor, in this issue Aaron shows how that same man can stand sword to fang with another god, fight it back, and win the day. They’re thematic twins, but that simplification does the story a disservice. It’s exciting, bloody and a triumphant conclusion to Aaron’s run.

Asrar and Wilson continue to show why they were the perfect art team for this story. Asrar’s line work carries a great sense of weight, which makes the combat not just visceral, but also impactful. He also gives Conan his own type of grace, a fluidity that feels like an angry lion, and not just a clumsy berserker. Wilson fills the story with browns and reds that are able to add tension to the battle, as well as a gorgeous literal sunset to close the story.

While I’m sad to see this chapter end, I’m excited to see what’s next, especially with the announcement of King Conan by the same creative team in the back of the book!

Conan the Barbarian #12 is available now from Marvel Comics.
