Demons, Werewolves, And The Hunters Thereof In Hellboy And The B.P.R.D: Long Night At Goloski Station #1

Hellboy arrives at Goloski in search of Professor Onchukov, an old associate of the B.P.R.D. Instead, he finds an old man holding Onchukov’s head. The professor was a werewolf, and this man slew him. Now all Hellboy can do is wait out the night for the train going back south with Onchukov’s killer, the man named Yad Tovich. Soon after, a trio arrive at Goloski, and Helllboy and Yad immediately clock them as a warlock and his two demon servants. The warlock makes Yad an offer to leave Hellboy and live, but Yad knows a man who will pay good money for a warlock’s hand.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Goloski Station #1 is an entertaining one-shot centering on Hellboy and Yad waiting out the warlock and demons through a long and cold Russian night.
The story is simple and straightforward, but the brilliance of it lies in the characters and pacing. Yad is an interesting figure with a number of charming quirks, and his eagerness to work with Hellboy is surprising yet endearing.
A bit of the plot also hinges on Hellboy’s battle with the Baba Yaga. The territory around Golinski Station is all the more dangerous for Hellboy, as the Baba Yaga has put a price on his head. That’s why Hellboy must stay at the station and wait for the train, and it’s also why the warlock wants Hellboy.
The rest of the story I won’t spoil, but there aren’t any major shocks. It’s just a damn solid and entertaining comic.
Matt Smith’s artwork resembles the work of Mike Mignola quite well. As such, it feels right at home in the B.P.R.D. universe. Hellboy is tall, broad, and shadowed. The warlocks and demons are unnerving and suspicious from the outset. Yad is a weathered and tired old man. Dave Stewart’s color art grants the book the gloomy atmosphere it needs for the story to gel.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Golinski Station #1 is a thoroughly charming and compelling one-off story that finds Hellboy weathering the night against its evils with an old wolf hunter. It’s a great read and is easily worth a recommendation. Feel free to give it a read.
