Caught In A Web While Bridging The Gap In Star Trek: Year Five #7

[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]

We start at the Tholian homeworld, where a trespasser of the Tholian Assembly warns them of the dangers of the Federation, the Enterprise, and Captain James T. Kirk himself. The Assembly takes this warning seriously and prepares for war. Meanwhile, Spock and Kirk continue to learn of the Tholians from Bright Eyes. However, this conversation is interrupted by the ship suddenly stopping. The Enterprise has been caught in a Tholian Web, and Spock can’t get them out this time. However, another ship was also caught in the Web, and Kirk and Sulu disembark for this vessel in the hopes that they can find salvation for the Enterprise and her crew.

Star Trek: Year Five #7 finds the Enterprise on a collision course with the Tholians once again. An unknown aggressor riles the Tholian Assembly for war against the Federation, and a Tholian Web has ensnared the Enterprise once again.

It once again gets to the heart of the mission of the Enterprise: to seek out new life and new civilizations. The Enterprise and the Federation have still had minimal contact with the Tholians, and the Federation know little of their culture. Learning about it is the only way to avoid a needless war.

Beyond the engaging story, the characters are once again well-represented in this issue. Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Bones, Uhura, Chekov, and Scotty all behave and speak as we’ve come to expect.

Stephen Thompson gives the book a clean and highly-detailed aesthetic, and it’s impressive how much the crew of the Enterprise resemble their actor counterparts from television and film. The Tholians have a great design as well, and the new alien species we meet in this issue looks damn cool too. Charlie Kirchoff’s color work adds a lot to the comic as well, giving a vibrant palette to this science fiction adventure.

Star Trek: Year Five #7 brings us another smartly-written and compelling issue of the Enterprise and her crew navigating space, encountering new species, and attempting to form a peaceful bond across civilizations. It’s a solid read and one well worth a recommendation. Feel free to check it out.

Star Trek: Year Five #7 comes to us from writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, artist Stephen Thompson, color artist Charlie Kirchoff, letterer Neil Uyetake, cover artist Stephen Thompson with Charlie Kirchoff, and variant cover artist J.J. Lendl.

Final Score: 8/10
