After a very successful 2019, Rebellion announced this week that they plan to keep the Specials rolling all the way through 2020, with 12 brand-new Specials announced, running from March.
This means you’ll not only be seeing the return of the Tammy & Jinty Special and the Cor! Buster Special, as well as the traditional 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special, but you’ll also see the return of some very big and hugely influential names, including legendary British comics Battle and Action making their come back!
Senior Editor at Rebellion and the man in charge of The Treasury, Keith Richardson has this to say…
We’re really excited about our 2020 specials and to be able to put together such an impressive roster of talent has been a real privilege, with plenty more announcements still to come.
Rebellion owns the world’s biggest archive of English language comics and to say we’re spoilt for choice is an understatement – but we’ve picked out iconic titles to reinvigorate for the 21st Century, alongside some of the best new products Rebellion has to offer. We’re putting these comics back where they belong – back on the newsstand and back in front of new audiences.

Again, a lot of this is down to the ever-expanding Treasury of British Comics, which publishes both reprints and new material of some of the most famous strips and comics in Brit comics history.
As with these specials, these will be reviving some old favouries that should have tremendous appeal to both readers who remember the strips and comics the first time round and to new readers. Because, as we know, it’s all about bringing new readers in!
Inside the Specials for 2020, we’re promised some stellar names in comics, including Garth Ennis (The Boys, Preacher), Ram V (Catwoman), Alex de Campi (Dredd), Rob Williams (Suicide Squad), Dan Lish (Egostrip), VV Glass (Doctor Who), Danijel Žeželj (Luna Park) and many, many more!
As with 2019, you can expect to laugh your way through a brand-new set of classic comedy characters in the Cor!! Buster Easter Special, more Halloween scares with Misty & Scream!, and more cracking girls’ comics in the Tammy & Jinty! Special. And this summer’s 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special celebrates two decades of Thrill-power under the Rebellion banner!
With the new Specials this year, you can expect everything from the absolutely groundbreaking war stories of Battle to the violent carnage of Action, you’ll find plenty of old-school Brit superhero action in Smash, devilishly good derring-do with The Return of Sexton Blake and classic espionage in Thriller Picture Library.
And seeing as its a European Cup year, with 12 cities in 12 countries, including England playing host to Euro 2020, it only seems right that we’ll be seeing Melchester’s own Roy Race taking part with the Roy of the Rovers Euro 2020 Special.
Finally, with its release date not yet confirmed, there’s the brand-new Evil Genius 2, continuing Rebellion’s transformation of its top gaming titles into comics.
Yes, 2020 is going to be a very special year for Rebellion! Here’s a little more on just three of those titles…
Action issue 32 – 1976, cover by Carlos Ezquerra
– featuring Kids Rule OK, the strip Pat Mills think got the comic banned!
Action, created by Pat Mills, ran for 36 issues before the media backlash to its strips saw it cancelled, with issue 37 pulped. It was truly ground-breaking, with a host of memorable characters being brought back in 2020 by some of the best comic talents of today. You’ll see the killer shark Hookjaw by Dan Lish, juvenile delinquency in Kids Rule OK by Ram V and Henrick Stahlstrom, the terrifying firepower of Hellman of Hammer Force by Garth Ennis and Mike Dorey, secret agent action with Dredger by Zina Hutton, and a brand new strip, Hell Machine by Henry Flint. All this and, with the exclusive edition available from the 2000 AD website, a bagged reproduction of the ‘banned’ issue of Action from October 1976.
Another classic making a comeback – Battle, the comic that thrilled and shock with the strips that never held back from portraying the reality of war.
The 96-page 2020 Special features the return of Rat Pack, Destroyer, El Mestizo, and more of these classic strips, all from such names as Garth Ennis, Alex De Campi, Alan Hebden, Brent McKee, Keith Burns, Rob Williams.
(The Spider – by Reg Bunn)
British superheroes are a special joy all their own, more bizarre and off-beat than their American cousins. And Smash! featured some of the best. And now, such names as The Spider, Steel Claw, Mytek The Mighty, and Johnny Future return in the 64-page Smash! Special!
Inside, you’ll find The Spider by Rob Williams and John McCrea, The Steel Claw by Danijel Žeželj, man of the future Johnny Future by Tom Raney, giant robot ape Mytek the Mighty by Suyi Davies Okungbowa and Anand Radhakrishnan, and many more!
