SHAZAM! #7 Takes Readers Deep Into The Magiclands

Billy Batson’s family has been through a lot since their series began. They began exploring the Magiclands, showing readers sides of the DC Universe we had no idea existed. SHAZAM! #7 kicks off the series’ second arc by showing us that we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface…

Geoff Johns, Dale Eaglesham, Scott Kolins, Michael Atiyeh, and Rob Leigh take us back to save Billy’s family.

Billy and Mary reveal the truth to Victor and Rosa as they spring into action to save their siblings. Meanwhile Freddy and Darla do their best to survive alongside Talky Tawny in the Wildlands, with the duo narrowly avoiding getting eaten alive. And in the Wozenderlands, Pedro and Eugene find themselves with an unexpected companion that may not be what it seems.

Johns continues to move pieces into place for an explosive conflict. It’s interesting world building, with character work that keeps the story moving in a way that hooks readers. Even though it’s executed well, there are still so many pieces in play that this issue doesn’t accomplish anything more than additional set-up. It’s good but is largely treads water.

Eaglesham and Kolins both continue to give us a great looking story, with Atiyeh’s fantastic color art. Eaglesham’s pages show how powerful the wizard’s magic is, but also the surreal nature of the Magiclands. There’s a few spots where the anatomy is strange and character movements are exaggerated in a way that stands out in a bad way.

Kolins’ pages depict claustrophobic horror that jumps off the page. He uses negative space to the advantage of the story, breaking the mold of his normal work. Billy’s horror is palpable and it’s not just because of the look on his face, it’s his layouts, the point of view and more. It’s great.

The road to their reunion has been revealed, but it’s a hard road for them. If it can overcome it’s faults, it looks like it’s going to be a fun read though.
