The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were already having trouble getting along with the new team members. After an encounter with the deadly assassin Dayne, they may never be the same again. Meanwhile, the Omega Rangers have their hands full on Breel as they face off against an alien queen and her forces.
Let’s start on Earth. Dayne has been lurking in the shadows since “Necessary Evil” began and now he makes his presence felt in a big, bad way. He’s studied the Power Rangers and understands their strengths and weaknesses. This allows him to attack them with brutal efficiency. They don’t know what hit them. He looks like he’s toying with them as he moves from Ranger to Ranger.
This opening sequence is narrated by a conversation between Billy and Zordon as they recount these events. Writer Ryan Parrott plays up the defeated tone in the Blue Ranger’s voice. He understands just how badly they were beaten. This effect is used again later on in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #43, super imposing speech against an ominous sequence. It gives you the feeling that the team isn’t going to come back from this fight.
Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo brings these action scenes to life in some gorgeous images. The fight choreography is fantastic with some fast-paced cuts and awesome camera angles. This is blockbuster level action playing out on the page. You really understand just how powerful and focused Dayne is as he meticulously attacks the Power Rangers without breaking a sweat.
One of the coolest aspects of the Power Rangers TV shows have always been the morphin scenes. Sure, it’s just re-used footage to pad the episodes, but it’s always cool to see. We don’t have that luxury in the comic, nor would we want to waste space. Instead, we get these cool shots of the Rangers in mid-transformation. Their costumes are forming around them in a flashy way.
Colorist Walter Baiamonte captures the vibrant color palette that has come to define the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. His work really amplifies Di Nicuolo’s pencils, adding some intensity to the fight scenes. There’s a chilling sequence on the moon as Dayne speaks with Lord Zedd that feels like something out of Silence of the Lambs. This is a maniacal madman and the dark tones come through in Baiamonte’s colors.
Dayne’s speech is shown in dim yellow word balloons. Letterer Ed Dukeshire creates a menacing tone for the character this way that only makes him even more disturbing.
The Omega Rangers’ situation presents a moral dilemma that stretches back to Lord Drakkon. The effects of his attack are still being felt across the universe. We’re building towards a monumental encounter between Kiya and the other Rangers as it’s only a matter of time before she learns Zack, Jason, and Trini are responsible for the death of her family. They might not realize this just yet as reality is still piecing itself together.
“Necessary Evil” has been more foreboding that “Shattered Grid” was. I’m still not entirely sure where it’s going between Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Go Go Power Rangers. There are some great character moments, which I’ve come to expect from writer Ryan Parrott, yet I don’t see how they all come together yet. I’m still very much on board to see where this story arc goes next.
