At the end of “Shattered Grid,” the evil Lord Drakkon was defeated and reality was in flux. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had to put things back together, but we didn’t know what that would entail or how things would look on the other side…until now. As “Necessary Evil,” the next big Power Rangers event begins, we return to Angel Grove with some new faces and new villains.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this storyline since before it was even announced. We had a bit of a detour with “Beyond the Grid” and now we’re jumping back into the swing of things with a new creative team and a few changes. Since reality itself was rewritten, there’s an opportunity to change stuff. From the looks of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40, we jump ahead in the overall timeline with Tommy Oliver trading in his green uniform for a white one and Lord Zedd knocking Rita out of the position of big bad. This opens up a slew of new story possibilities.
MMPR #40 wastes no time getting into the action. Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo does a tremendous job with the fight scenes showing the team fighting a bird monster named Nefurious in London. I love the variety in the perspectives used, giving you a real 360 degree look at the battle. This helps with some of the more exciting sequences, such as the first appearance of the White Ranger, bursting onto the scene with a powerful attack.
Colorist Walter Baiamonte raises the intensity of the scene with some great work. The sky is a fiery red, contrasting with the colorful costumes of the Rangers. Their attacks burst off the page like electricity surging from their weapons.
Every member of the creative team works to deliver top notch action in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40. Letterer Ed Dukeshire uses some big, bold word balloons for the Rangers as they’re in the midst of the fight. Their dialogue is interspersed with attack cries.
Writer Ryan Parrott has a real talent for character development, as shown in Go Go Power Rangers. He brings those skills to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with a new status quo. There’s tension within the team between new members and past. Tommy is thrust into the role of leader and he’s got some big shoes to fill. Meanwhile, the new kids are trying to find their place, but at the end of the day, they’re not Jason, Trini, and Zack. This is rife for drama and this issue delivers it in spades.
This issue is packed with character development as we get these deep moments that give you an immediate understanding of who a person is and where they’re coming from. It works like a big level set. This is true for the Rangers as well as the villains and even the side characters. I never thought I’d feel sorry for Bulk, but there’s a definite moment in there where I wanted to hug the big guy.
Much of this comes through in Di Nicuolo’s artwork. The facial expressions of each character speak volumes and add some additional weight to their words. We see this both in and out of costume, as we get a glimpse through the visor of the Rangers’ helmets.
With comics like this, it’s definitely a great time to be a Power Rangers fan. This issue brings us back to basics while also moving the franchise forward which is a very fine line. I’m super pumped for “Necessary Evil” and what this team has in store for us.
