The Sons of El Topo, a 1970 Mexican Acid Western film written, scored, directed by, and starring Alejandro Jodorowsky is getting a sequel graphic novel this December from Boom! Studios’ Archaia imprint. Written by Jodorowsky and illustrated by José Ladrönn, the comic picks up with the merciless gunslinger El Topo after he’s abandoned his pursuit of ultimate gun mastery. Instead, he searches for enlightenment in the unlikeliest of places and is forever transformed into a holy vessel imbued with the power to perform miracles and cheat death.
Tragedy strikes just as El Topo gains sainthood. His community of outcasts is murdered right before his eyes and his long-abandoned Hijo, Cain returns to kill the father who discarded him many years ago. Cain may be fueled by resentment, but he’s unable to strike his saintly father. He opts to instead hunt down his half-brother, Abel.
Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor at Boom! Studios says:
The son becomes the father in this new chapter of El Topo’s saga as we follow Cain’s journey through the same desert wastelands and twisted mental landscapes that Jodorowsky built for us in the original film. Longtime devotees and new fans alike will love to explore this world with Jodorowsky and Ladrönn at the helm.
I will be honest and say that I had never heard of El Topo prior to this graphic novel, but I am rather curious. The description is pretty interesting and the artwork is incredible. Plus, anything described as a “Mexican Acid Western film” can’t be bad, right?
The Sons of El Topo: Volume One – Cain is set for release on December 19th at your local comic shop. It will arrive in bookstores on December 25th.
